The Avon Fire & Rescue acquired the Lansdown site in 1993 and commenced to redevelop the site into the South West Command Development Centre in 2002. Within the venue, which is a 'Bunker' facility, 2 Hydra suites and 1 Minerva suite have been built comprising of 4 dedicated syndicate rooms, a conference and training facilities, 5 breakout meeting rooms and refreshment facilities throughout.
The Lansdown site is a unique and interesting location as it was commissioned during the cold war and completed in 1954, to counter the A-bomb threat delivered by enemy aircraft, as the Anti-Aircraft Operations Room (AAOR) for Gun Defended Area (GDA) Bristol Group 2. Lansdown was primarily involved with the defence of Bristol with its industrial and port sites considered as prime targets.
