Dr Michael Humann
Training Coordinator

Michael Humann is the Training Coordinator at the Centre for Critical and Major Incident Psychology Research. He received his BSc (Hons) in Forensic Psychology, from Teesside University, and later completed his MSc in Investigative & Forensic Psychology as well as his PhD at the University of Liverpool, and is currently a lecturer on the MSc in Investigative & Forensic Psychology. His current research has focused on designing and delivering training courses for law enforcement practitioners, focusing on multi-agency and international cooperation. The emphasis has been on transferability and applicability of psychological and organisational frameworks, aimed at accelerating expertise and improving the overall capability of agencies in dealing with critical and major incidents.

His work has focused on developing and delivering training using immersive simulated learning environments, aimed at improving critical incident decision making, as well as developing expertise in policing and emergency response. He has carried out a number of large-scale focus groups and debriefs, with emergency services, government agencies and partner organisations. Dr Humann has been the educational advisor for the Pan-European Football Policing Training Project, designing and delivering training to police forces and partners around Europe, including preparations for EURO 2012 and current Safety & Security programmes within CEPOL. His current research areas include the identification of factors that affect communication and collaboration during multi-agency incidents, how these environments influence individual decision-making processes, and how technology and the use of autonomous systems can function as decision aids during these situations. Additionally, his work also focuses on challenges around knowledge transfer and accelerating expertise, maximising the yield of learning environments and how technology can contribute to development and design.
